Dr. Rema Renolds Biography

Dr. Rema is a former K-12 public school teacher, counselor, administrator, and parent organizer with over two decades of experience. Currently, Dr. Rema is an assistant professor at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and teaches Educational Leadership to Masters and Doctoral students. With a focus on developing transformative servant leaders, Dr. Reynolds has also taught and presented at professional conferences throughout the United States and in over 20 countries.

Dr. Rema’s research is centered in schools serving culturally diverse students and families. Specifically, Rema primarily examines issues of parent engagement as they relate to Black families and student achievement and the roles educators and students play in creating social change through community and civic development. Her forthcoming book focuses on engaging underrepresented parents in schools and provides practical guides and strategies for both parents and school officials.

Committed to every student learning, Dr. Rema has worked as a consultant for a number of school districts across the country, equipping educators with reflexive practices that allow them to take deliberate action and increase equity and access for all students. Concurrently, she serves as advisor to undergraduate student groups who are committed to safety, belongingness, and inclusion for minoritized students. With her guidance, EMU’s Black Student Union and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People host an annual Black Leadership Summit bringing student leaders from every major college campus in the state together to learn leadership theory, create camaraderie, and discover constructive strategies to combat racism, ensure fairness, and protect their humanity.

Undergirded with a PhD from UCLA in Urban Schooling, Dr. Rema consistently builds capacity with underserved communities to assist the most marginalized in realizing their agency. In addition to speaking truth to power in every space, Dr. Rema is known for her love for people and her desire to actualize the collective power of people. Knowledge is power. Power is freedom.
